Step-by-Step Guide: Upload a Canva Template to Etsy as a Digital Product
Part 1: Finalize your Canva template
Before you upload your Canva template to Etsy, double check your design to make sure that everything looks right & that your design will be simple for your customers to customize and use.
- Confirm design sizes, fonts, colors, and page order.
- Remove any Pro elements if you want your buyers to be able to edit & download their template with a free Canva account.
- Name pages clearly (e.g., “Cover,” “Daily Planner,” “Monthly Goals”). This reduces support messages.
Part 2: Generate the Template Link (not an edit link)
Once your design looks good and you’ve removed Canva Pro elements, you can generate a template link.
Note: It is extremely important that when sharing your Canva template with buyers, you share a template link, NOT an edit link to your design.
Sharing a direct link to your design will make it possible for buyers’ personal changes to change your original design, and this will also change all other buyers’ projects.
Here’s how to generate a template link:
Step 1: In your Canva design, click Share.

Step 2: Select See All

Step 3: Choose Template link / Use as template (wording may show as “Template link” in Canva). This generates a special URL that forces “Use template,” so buyers get their own copy. They won’t be editing your original.

Step 4: Click Create Template link. This template link is what you’ll be sharing with your buyers.

Step 5: Click Copy Link. Next, I’ll show you how to embed this link into a shareable & clickable PDF that you can upload to Etsy & share with your buyers.

Part 3: Create your Delivery PDF in Canva
This is the file your Etsy customer will actually download.
Step 1: Create a new Canva design. The size doesn’t matter, but I usually use the default Instagram Post (4:5) size.

Step 2: Add a headline: “Thanks for your purchase!”
Optional: You can also add an aesthetically pleasing picture of the design that your customer purchased.

Step 3: Add a big, clear button: “Click here to edit your template”

Step 4: Click the button/text → press the three dots → select link → paste your Template Link.

Part 4: Export the Delivery PDF (make sure the link is clickable)
Step 1: Click Share → Download → PDF Standard (or PDF Print).

Step 2: Download, open the PDF, and click the button you created to make sure that it works. It should open Canva and show a “Use template” button.
Part 5: Create your Etsy listing (as a Digital Product)
Step 1: Add a listing → Digital product.
Step 2: Create your title, description, tags, and add your listing covers as usual.
Step 3: Determine a price for your product. You can use ProfitTree to find top-selling products in your niche and price your products similarly to theirs for maximum revenue.
Step 4: In the “digital files” section, upload the Delivery PDF you just created. This file will be made automatically available for your customers upon purchase.
Tips for Selling Canva Templates on Etsy
- Keyword research first: use tools like ProfitTree to find demand, pricing, and keywords customers actually search.
- Offer bundles (e.g., printable invite invitation + thank-you for attending + digital e-vite) to increase perceived value.
- Include a mini FAQ in the downloadable files covering common questions: free vs. Pro Canva, mobile vs. desktop, common troubleshooting. This will reduce customer service requests.
FAQ: Uploading Canva Templates to Etsy
Do I need Canva Pro to sell templates on Etsy?
Yes. Canva recently updated their terms, and you now need to have a Canva Pro subscription in order to generate template links.
For the best buyer experience, make sure you only use free fonts, graphics, and elements when creating your design. That way, your customers can edit and download their completed designs without needing a Canva Pro subscription themselves. If you design with Canva Pro features, your buyers will need Canva Pro to edit their templates.
Why do I need to make a PDF for my Etsy template?
Etsy requires a file upload to deliver digital products. By creating a PDF with a clickable button that links to your Canva template, you give buyers instant access to their copy without any confusion. It also helps you look more professional and reduces support messages.
What happens if I send the wrong link?
If you accidentally share your edit link instead of a template link, every buyer will be editing the same file. This is a nightmare! Always click Share → Template link in Canva to make sure each buyer gets their own copy.
Can I test my Canva delivery before publishing?
Yes, and you should! Download your PDF and click the button to make sure it opens Canva and prompts “Use template.” You can even send it to a friend to double-check the experience.
Can I sell the same Canva template multiple times?
Absolutely. Once your PDF is set up, you can sell that same template over and over again, virtually forever, creating a source of passive income without any extra work on your end.
How do I make my Canva template listing stand out?
Use clear, high-quality listing covers with mockups that show exactly what’s included. You can click here to watch my Etsy listing cover tutorial for digital products.
Include keywords buyers are searching for, and add instructions or tips in your description to show that your product is beginner-friendly and easy to use.
